Auditions and Voicings

 

Voicings

All new UA choral singers will participate in a voicing in the first week of their first semester in a UA choir. This is NOT an audition. It is simply a way for the choral faculty to learn more about each singer and their strengths. More information to be provided in class.

 

Druid City Chorus Voicings

All participants in the DCC participate in an individual voicing in the University of Alabama School of Music room 164. Appointments take no longer than 15 minutes.

Current members must do a re-voicing every two years. These are necessary to keep up with the pace of the ensemble’s standards as a collaborator across the state of Alabama and beyond. 

      • Sopranos and Tenors will re-voice in odd-numbered years.
      • Altos and Basses will re-voice in even-numbered years.

No advance preparation is needed. However, please come warmed up and ready to sing! Voicings will consist of:

      • Vocalization demonstrating your vocal range and tessitura
      • Aural skills assessment 
      • Sight-reading an exercise or two of moderate difficulty

2024-25 season voicing dates: 

      • Friday-Sunday, May 17-19, 2024
      • Sunday-Tuesday August 4-6, 2024
      • Sunday-Monday, August 18-19, 2024 (UA, Stillman, and Shelton State students only)

University Singers Auditions

University Singers is open to rising sophomore through graduate students. Auditions for a given academic season are held in April of the previous year.

Auditions for the 2024-25 season are complete. University Singers 2025-26 auditions will be held in the first two weeks of April 2025. If you plan to audition, please register for a non-auditioned ensemble during course registration. Should you be accepted into the ensemble, we will adjust your registration accordingly.

There is no need to prepare anything. However, please do come warmed up and ready to sing. The audition will consist of: 

      • Vocalizing – You will be guided through warm-ups to listen to your range, tone quality, and intonation. No advance preparation is needed.
      • Aural Skills – No advance preparation is needed.
      • Sight Reading – You will be given a short sightreading example, which you may sing on a syllable of your choosing. No advance preparation is needed.
