Auditions and Voicings

Join a UA Choir

The UA Choral Ensembles are open to everyone! To join a UA Choir, simply register for the course that best fits the collegiate choral experience you are looking for. Learn more about each of our choral ensembles under the “Choirs” tab above. Treble Chorus, Tenor Bass Chorus, and University Chorus do not require an audition. The Druid City Chorus (Tuscaloosa-UA Community Chorus) and University Singers both require an audition. Please see audition information below.

All new UA choral singers will participate in a voicing in the first week of the semester. This is NOT an audition. It is simply a way for the choral faculty to learn more about each singer and their strengths. More information to be provided in class.

UA students can join a choir for 1-credit or 0-credits. There is a group for every person who enjoys singing on campus, including undergraduates, graduates, music majors, and non-music majors.

The following ensembles do NOT require an audition:

  • Treble Chorus, MUA 168/268/368/468/568: Mon/Wed/Fri 1:00-1:50pm
  • Tenor Bass Chorus, MUA 192/292/392/492/592: Tues/Thurs 11:00am-12:15pm
  • University Chorus, MUA 162/262/362/462/562: Tues/Thurs 12:30-1:45pm

The following ensembles require an audition:

  • University Singers, MUA 163/263/363/463/563: Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs 2:00-3:15pm*
  • Druid City Chorus/Tuscaloosa-UA Community Chorus, MUA 116/216/316/416: Mon 6:30-8:00pm*

*To register for ensembles that require an audition, please initially register for a non-auditioned ensemble as a placeholder

University Singers Auditions

Auditions for the University Singers are held at the opening and close of each year, and by appointment at the end of the fall semester.

University Singers 2024-25 auditions will be held in the first two weeks of April! This is the only open audition for the 2024-25 University Singers season. No need to prepare anything. However, please do come warmed up and ready to sing.

The audition will consist of:

  • Vocalizing – You will be guided through warm-ups to listen to your range, tone quality, and intonation. No advance preparation is needed.
  • Aural Skills – No advance preparation is needed.
  • Sight Reading – You will be given a short sightreading example, which you may sing on a syllable of your choosing. No advance preparation is needed.

If you plan to audition, please register for a non-auditioned ensemble at during course registration. Should you be accepted into the ensemble, we will adjust your registration accordingly.
