UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA HONOR CHOIR 2019
Sunday October 27th & Monday October 28th
Dr. Ronald Staheli, HS Clinician
We are excited to announce this year’s clinician, Dr. Ronald Staheli. For 30 years, Dr. Staheli conducted the BYU Singers, one of the finest choirs in the United States. He is revered by colleagues and former students for his music-making and passion for excellence.
To ensure that all participating high school students have the best Honor Choir experience possible, we are instituting a few changes to the UA Honor Choir format for 2019:
- High school singers will be joined by the full UA University Singers for the entire rehearsal process and concert.
- Interested high school singers will be required to apply online, similar to how band students apply to the UA Honor Bands (but applying will be $ free).
- Music and practice tracks will be provided in advance.
- To be selected for the 32nd Annual UA Honor Choir, and therefore to have the opportunity to sing with other motivated singers, collegiate singers, and a world-class clinician, will truly be a great honor for those high school singers selected.
- Interested high school singers fill out the free application.
- The applicant’s choir director will receive a link to a recommendation form.
- Singers selected for the honor choir will be notified via email and proceed to pay registration fee of $60.
- Music will be distributed.
September 20 Application and Recommendation Form Deadline (midnight).
September 27 Singers will be notified of their acceptance.
October 1 Music and practice tracks will be distributed.
October 27-28 Honor Choir Festival
With these changes, we hope that participating high school singers will have a powerful music-making experience that they will not soon forget, and that they will return newly inspired and ready to be even stronger leaders for your programs. If you have any questions, please be in touch.

SELECTION OF PARTICIPANTS
Students will be selected by a committee of University of Alabama School of Music faculty. Information included on the student application and the choir director’s recommendation will be the primary criteria used to select participants. In most cases, the committee will use the student resume and choir director recommendation as sole sources of information about the students. By completing the application, students agree to waive any right to see the teacher recommendation and understand that teacher’s responses to the recommendation form will remain confidential.
Students and directors are encouraged to complete the resume and recommendation in detail and be sure that the required information is available to us prior to the close of registration. Each director who submits a positive recommendation is guaranteed that at least one student from each school will be selected to participate in the festival. Students selected to participate must attend all rehearsals, classes, and performances during the Honor Choir Festival. A list of students chosen to participate in the 2019 University of Alabama Honor Choir will be distributed by September 27. Please note that attendance at ALL concerts, classes, rehearsals, and events for the entire Honor Choir Festival are REQUIRED for all student participants attending the festival! No one may leave early or arrive late.
The University of Alabama Honor Choir will provide a pizza dinner on the Sunday evening of the event, and otherwise does not provide housing or meals. Arrangements for housing, supervision, transportation and meals should be taken care of by the high school director. For the 2019 University of Alabama Honor Choir, students chosen to participate will be required to pay a participation fee of $60.00, which includes admission to all clinics, concerts and includes a Festival t-shirt. This participation fee will be due AFTER students have been notified that they have been selected to participate in the University of Alabama Honor Choir. Much more detailed information will be available to those students selected to participate in the festival.
Participants who plan to enroll at UA next fall and not major in music may audition for a participation scholarship award. Recipients must sing in a specified university choir at UA each semester. To audition, singers will perform a 1-minute prepared solo of their choice (please bring sheet music; an accompanist will be provided), sight read a short melodic exercise, and interview.
In addition, Dr. Staheli will be on the UA campus as our Endowed Chair for the following two days. On Wednesday, he will lead open rehearsals and a lecture concert featuring the music of Eric Whitacre. Dr. Staheli is widely considered to be the world’s foremost Whitacre scholar. Eric Whitacre wrote, “More than any other conductor I have ever worked with, Dr. Staheli understands my music. He is that rare musician who discovers more music in the music than the composer even realized was there.” These rehearsals and the concert are open to the public, and you and your students are welcome and invited to attend.
